Hey friends,

If you get hangry, it’s probably because you’re insulin resistant.

Heck of a claim, huh? That’s what I thought when I came across Cate Shanahan’s article this week linking seed oils to metabolic disease and cancer.

Though it is long, I learned a TON from reading bits and pieces in her article. She also wrote a great summary here.

I’m also pretty stoked about the blog post from LMNT’s co-founder, Nicki Violetti, on supporting milk supply when breastfeeding. It’s something Ashlyn and I discussed often last fall, so it’s great to have some literature on it now.

As always, thanks for reading!

P.S. Another banger meal I made this week!

Grass-fed 85% burgers, Meister hickory smoked cheddar, caramelized onions, fresh green beans sautƩed in garlic butter, and a bratwurst

My take: I saw this blog post come through my email this week from LMNT, my favorite electrolyte company, and it grabbed my attention because my wife faced a milk supply issue when she was breastfeeding Caleb, our second baby, last fall. We did some surface-level research on how sodium impacts a woman’s milk supply, but this article was eye-opening! There are so many benefits that come from supplementing sodium when breastfeeding.

ā˜£ļø The energy model of insulin resistance: A unifying theory linking seed oils to metabolic disease and cancer ā€“ Dr. Cate Shanahan

My take: Do you get hangry? You may be insulin resistant. Here’s the process:

  1. Seed oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically linoleic acid, which is known for causing inflammation.

  2. Highly processed seed oils lead to oxidative stress.

  3. Oxidative stress suffocates cells, putting them in survival mode so they extract sugar from the bloodstream, causing hypoglycemia.

  4. Hypoglycemia causes a flood of stress hormones in your body.

Seed oils aren’t just another trendy common enemy on social media – they’re extremely dangerous!
