🍌 Are Bananas Junk Food?

Hey friends,

I used to think fruits like açaí were 'superfoods.'

In reality, it was this kind of clever marketing that convinced me to indulge in sugary fruits, overlooking the high sugar content for the superfood hype.

This week I also came across a couple more great resources on cholesterol myths and the relationship between insulin resistance and sleep.

Hope you enjoy, and as always, thanks for being here. :)

🦄 Three Myths About Cholesterol People Still Believe – Annette Bosworth, MD

My take: We’ve been trained to demonize cholesterol for decades because of some early false correlational studies (and, if you ask me, broader corruption – but we’ll save that for another day 😇). Once you start to understand it’s role in the body, you quickly learn how essential it is. In three minutes, Dr. Boz highlights the top 3 myths about cholesterol that could be sabotaging your health.

😴 Sleep and Insulin Resistance – Dr. Benjamin Bikman

My take: Turns out sleep is just as important as diet when it comes to insulin resistance. Bad sleep raises stress hormones, affects hormone rhythms, and makes insulin work overtime, especially if you’re going to bed after snacking all evening. A good reminder about how lifestyle affects blood sugar just as much as the carbs we eat.

🍌 Sugary Diets Disrupt Brain's Appetite Control, Linking Fructose to Overeating and Obesity – Multiple authors

My take: The brain’s GLP-1 receptor curbs appetite by calming the hunger signals, but this relies on glucose being regulated the right way. High fructose diets can scramble your appetite control, which can lead to overeating and some serious metabolic conditions. My brain goes straight to modern day fruits. They’re bred to be bigger, sweeter, and more visually appealing, yet we all seem to think they’re healthy foods. To me, the downside of fruit being absolute fructose bombs outweigh any possible benefits.
